Reviewing your Shipaton apps
Rating and reviewing your Shipaton app in App Store and Play Store.
Contents
Yesterday we sent out the Shipaton results. There were almost 4,000 submissions and with only 60 winners, 98.5% of participants got the email nobody wants to get. I know how much it hurts after weeks of work.
We (organizers of Shipaton) don't provide direct feedback on submissions, because it is not possible. Most of the time there isn't a single reason. The median app was really good. Why one app was picked over another, does not mean the other one had any negative qualities.
I said on Twitter that if you however want my honest review, share your app and I'll download it over the next two weeks and write a review for it.
I took an export of the apps mentioned in that tweet, and made this page so I can keep track what I still have in the download and review queue. If you don't see your app, just ping me and I'll get it added.
The apps

Lobby: Play Games with Friends
Spy, Mafia & Local Multiplayer
Way more games than I expected
This app has a bunch of games, way more than I expected. I have not had the chance to test it with a friend because there has not been an occasion for it. I wouldn’t mind playing against strangers, so the game could even have an indicator showing if there are rooms to join. Also, since there are games you can play solo (Color Hunt and Reflex), I think those should be emphasized more and be easier to find. As it is, I almost missed them and almost didn’t play any games because I didn’t have a friend around to play with. The app is really polished. A nice thing is that you get so much for free.

MemoUS: Baby Memory Book
Child Development Journal
A lot of potential but UI needs some work
I like this app, but I find the UI too generic, and because of that it is hard to understand all the things you can do with the app. The app actually has a lot of features, but the onboarding does not guide you to use them at all and you have to discover them yourself. For example, it is hard to understand how the different tabs differ from each other, and all of them have a lot of buttons and text which all compete for attention. I think the app would be more fun to use if there was a focus on key features and things were a bit simpler. You can only add children that have been born, which makes it difficult to save ultrasounds and other pre-birth memories, for example. Some other smaller things I would fix: the splash screen is too busy and the small text is hard to read; some of the text is hard to understand because it is too concise and doesn’t sound natural; and the Japanese name ending field only really makes sense if you know what the endings mean, so I would just hide it for non-Japanese people.

Vocabloot: Learn Vocabulary
Spanish, Korean, Japanese +
This app teaches you words by having you take a picture of an item. It then gives you the written form (I used it for Japanese), the pronunciation and some example phrases with that item. For the example phrases in Japanese, it would be nice to have romaji as well. I don’t think the app should ask about analytics as the first thing. During onboarding, the app doesn’t really teach you how it works, so it is hard to understand before you’re already asked to subscribe. It’s a bit hidden, but you can actually use the app for free if you just press the close button, which takes you to the camera immediately. The UI is quite unique and fun looking, which is definitely a plus.

Still There : Legacy
Family archive, privately kept
This app is about collecting memories about your family. A few things I found annoying were that the audio doesn’t play during onboarding, and some of the buttons seem to bounce around weirdly. Also, the “Sign in to continue” prompt lets you select “Maybe later”, but that actually just closes the modal. Some of the UI text is very small and close together. I don’t think my parents could read it. I think it would be nice to build a family workspace (as the app calls them) already during onboarding, based on me dictating who is in my family. Then AI could create the people, find them in my contacts, and connect the photos and messages I’ve had with them. This way there would be less manual work, and I could even invite them directly to the app. I think it would also be nice to create the stories in the app by dictating them instead of writing. One feature I would like is a way to check in with my parents using this app: for example, reminding me to call them weekly, maybe even letting me reflect on things privately, and letting me add notes when I’ve called them.

STKR: Travel Collection
Collect Places You've Been
Please add automatic location import from photos
I really like how this app looks, and I like how the sharing options work (the UX is really nice). However, I find it a bit tedious to add places manually. Maybe you could add a feature to import all the countries based on the photos’ location data. That way, I could see where I’ve been and also explore the photos I took there automatically. The featured destinations was a bit hidden, but I like the idea and it could be developed into a small trip planning feature even I think.

A few notes
- I will do my best to rate and review the apps in the coming two weeks, but as you can see, there's a lot of them. I will do my best to leave honest feedback on what I like or what you could improve.
- If you replied with a link and your app isn't here, the link probably got lost when I was collecting the links. Send it to me again (contact details on the About page) and I'll add it.
While you refresh this page to see if your app has gotten a review (stores will probably ping you as well), how about you go and review other people's apps as well?
